Minister of Science, Energy and Technology Dr Andrew Wheatley is imploring local service providers to take advantage of opportunities that will emerge from Jamaica being positioned as the regional hub for natural gas.

Speaking Wednesday at the opening of the inaugural Natural Gas Conference, Wheatley said the government wants Jamaica to become the regional hub for natural gas and efforts are underway to bring it to fruition.

Consequently, the Energy minister said prospects will emerge in bunkering, shipping, and logistics.

He is also urging financial entities such as banks, investment firms, and insurance companies to scout for emerging possibilities.

Wheatley says educational institutions should also look at reconfiguring their curriculum to train the population so that they can take advantage of job opportunities that will also emerge.

He stresses that this would allow Jamaicans to derive maximum benefits from this emerging industry.

Based on Jamaica's energy policy, the aim is for natural gas to make up 26 per cent of Jamaica’s total energy supply by 2020 and 42 per cent by 2030.
