The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited has committed a total of $280,000 to building a new health centre in one of its host communities in Nigeria as part of its community development.

WAPCo is the owner and operator of the West Africa gas pipeline built to supply natural gas from Nigeria to customers in Benin, Togo and Ghana.

The Managing Director, WAPCo, Walter Perez, while speaking at the inauguration of the Ajido Community Health Centre in Badagry on Tuesday, said the company had invested more than $1m in brick-and-mortal projects within Lagos and Ogun states.

He said, “WAPCo’s responsibility towards every community within which it operates is of utmost importance to the organisation. This is why we embarked on a social responsibility journey in the four WAGP states of Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana. Today marks the culmination of our promise to the Ajido people.”

He said the company had invested resources in its community development drive over the years and was proud to show them as proofs of its readiness to do business the socially responsible way.

Perez said, “Aside from this health centre, which was constructed at a cost of $218,000, we also constructed a modern six-classroom block, with a store and head teacher’s office at Unity Primary School, Ajido, complete with modern school furniture. We assisted also in furnishing the palace of the late Aholu of Ajido and supplied fishing gear to improve the livelihood of people in the community.”

He said WAPCo had more recently commenced a scholarship scheme running in Lagos and Ogun states.

“So far, 345 candidates from communities in the two states have been awarded scholarships to pursue various degrees in different tertiary institutions all over the country for the entire length of their courses, while 297 people have undergone skills acquisition training at various technical and vocational centres. This has been at a cost of $938,000,” he said.
