Paint-splattered fundraiser held for organization that aids Haiti, Dominican Republic

A group of aspiring Jackson Pollocks gathered on the third floor of the old Taylor's Furniture Store building on Thursday to unleash their inner artist on blank canvasses while supporting a Sarnia-based organization that helps Haitians and the Dominicans by improving their education and health care systems.

The fundraiser was held for Sarnia's Rayjon Share Care, an organization that has created and helped maintain humanitarian projects in the two Caribbean nations for over 30 years.

Led by local artist Kirsten Anderson, the group got creative with their canvasses, dabbing colours, spraying water while being messy and inventive.

Money from the paint-splattered fundraiser will go into Rayjon's urban and rural community projects, said Rayjon's Ann Tuplin, adding those projects have made a big difference in the lives of many on the island of Hispaniola.

“And that's primarily for elementary education, adult education and women's micro-credit,” she said. “(Rayjon's) Veona Drennan thought this would be an entertaining way to raise money for Rayjon... we've done paint nights before, but never an abstract one.”

With a monitoring team going down to Haiti in May to see how projects are progressing, and awareness trips visiting Haiti and the Dominican Republic throughout the year, Tuplin said Rayjon is pleased with the progress.

“What we're encouraging these days is more independence and more empowerment of leaders there and we're seeing some real benefits in that respect,” she said. “We're very happy with what we're seeing.”
