Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, has said that the government is forging ahead with the exploration of possibilities to make use of natural gas.
Patterson has responsibility for energy.
Recently, as he addressed the House during Budget 2018 debates, Patterson said that Guyana has embarked on several projects to diversify its energy mix and strengthen the power generation sector.
He noted that during 2017, Government has been actively engaged in discussions regarding the commercial use of natural gas from its offshore resources as a transitional fuel for Guyana’s economy.
He said that this could involve landing a pipeline to bring gas onshore as well as the construction of a new power generation facility. Further, Patterson said that the project may also include the designing and mapping of an industrial park in close proximity to this power generation facility.
The Minister told the National Assembly that two sites, one in Region Four and another in Region Six are the leading candidates. He said a final decision will be made by the end of first quarter in 2018.
Patterson told the House that the Government envisions this proposed initiative as a means to complement the use of renewable energy and strengthen security of supply. He said that the Government is currently in discussions for studies with the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank in assessing the use of this “clean energy source, not only for downstream power generation, but also to support and enable investments in associated industries comprising a nearby industrial park in the short to medium term.
To cater to this timeline, GPL has invited Expressions of Interest in the interim for the development and installation of a 50 MW capacity natural gas fired power plant.”
